Roudnice nad Labem

The first written report come from 1167 and 1176, when the Roudnice archdeacons were mentioned as weitnesses of property conveyance. Roudnice became the property of the Praque bishops who had a stone Romanesque castle built on a rocky headland over the river at the turning point of the twelfth centuries. Roudnice became a place of frequent stays for the Praque bishops. By degrees they built the Church of St. Wenceslas with a hospital, in 1333 the Monastery of Augistinian Canonry, and a stone bridge across the Labe. In 1378 they founded the Roudnice New Town under the castle. Under Viléms rule, Roudnice had experienced prosperity, and this reached a peak under the Lobkowiczs. In 1628 the Capuchin Monastery and church were completed. In the 19 th century the Roudnice became the meaningful centre of the Czech national life.
