Bridge Hill

Adress: Mostná hora

Many locals call it the Greasy Hill ("Mastná hora") but the correct name derives from the word "bridge" ("most" in Czech) because the hill was used in the 18th century to transport timber for the construction of the local Baroque bridge. In the Austro-Hungarian Empire, its official name was "Emperor Francis Joseph's Hill". After 1918 it was renamed as the Freedom Hill. In 1910, a tourist restaurant was built on the hill in the German Romantic style, from the initiative of the Movement for the Development of Litom??ice, esp. its director Vilhelm Maier. The tower had three functions: it was used as a fire-warning tower, military watchtower and a meteorological station. The project was designed by architect Viktor Kraus and the construction was carried out by Krause-Poselt constructions. In 1934 Krause-Poselt built an additional restaurant (with a terrace and a ball room) and a garden pavillion. After the war the building was owned by the city; in 1955 it was included into the state-run restaurant chain. In 1990 the city acquired the building in restitution and later sold it; the new owner initiated a restoration based on the original design.
