The Royal Castle

Adress: Na Valech, ?p. 265

The castle apparently came into being in the second half of the 13th century under P?emysl Otakar II. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the reign of Charles IV and incorporated into the new belt of fortifications. The Czech kings stayed here during their short visits. In the year 1397 Wenceslas IV dedicated the castle to his sister Elizabeth, wife of the half-breed margrave William I. After this time the castle belonged to the town and burned down in 1655. In the years 1767-68 it was converted into the town brewery. In the 1980's the rest of the castle, known as the New Palace, was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The castle is not open to the public.
