City Wall Bastion

Adress: Mezibraní

Dates from around 1513, it was part of the city fortification system. Originally open, a wall was added in the 18th century; later it was adapted into the chapel of a regional prison located between the bastion and the inner wall, completed in 1806 and demolished in 1951. In 1951 the bastion was given a new truss and roofing. It was renovated again in 1992 and a restaurant was opened here. A legend has it that infamous bandit Václav Babinský was an altar server here. He was born in 1796 on the city suburb, house no. 52 (the house stood on the corner of the Daliborova and Na Valech streets). Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Pokratice where his siblings were born. In 1841, Babinský was sentenced to twenty years in prison. After serving time, he worked as a gardener in a nunnery in ?epy near Prague, where he died on 1 August, 1879.
