Episcopal Litom??ice
Adress: Dómské nám?stí
The chapter house of Litom??ice was founded in 1057 by Prince Spytihn?v. The original foundation document has been preserved in the local archive. This document is special because it contains the first written Czech sentence and can be considered to be the oldest remaining Czech customs tariff, concerning income declared from the tariff on transported goods. The Litom??ice bishopric was established in 1655. Eighteen bishops took it in turns on the tribune. The last bishop but one, Št?pán Maria Trochta, was summoned to office in 1947, and served his function until his death in 1974. He is buried in the local cemetery. From 1974 the bishopric lacked a head, and it wasn't until the year 1989 that the new bishop of Litom??ice was nominated, Josef Koukl, who has been looking after the diocese to this day.
St. Stephen's Cathedral
Its origins date back to the year 1057, when a Romanesque basilica was built on the orders of prince Spytihn?v, which was later converted in the Gothic style and then demolished in the years 1662-64. Then, between the years 1664-68 it was built by an Italian architect into the Baroque cathedral we can see today. The interior is richly decorated in black and gold. There are paintings here by Karel Škréta and Jan Czech, amongst others. The cathedral tower was erected in 1883-89 following a design by the Viennese architect Ferstel, and the original low Baroque bell tower was placed by the Litom??ice builder Sander.
