Art Gallery
Adress: Michalská 29
This building stands on the foundations of two or three smaller Gothic houses. In 1569 it was adapted in the Renaissance style, probably by Ambrose Balli, an architect of Italian origin; this suggestion is supported by the date on the sgraffito that covers the east side of the yard. The stucco front face was renovated around 1730 in the high Baroque style. The renovation was probably the work of Octavio Broggio. Today's adaptation dates from 1951-60, based on the project by architect M. Reichert. The house originally served for residential and commercial purposes; many of its owners were important citizens of Litom??ice (e.g., in 1902, JUDr. Alois Funke - imperial counsellor, member of parliament and mayor of Litom??ice). Today it houses the Art Gallery, which was established in 1957 from the initiative of art historian PhDr. Otakar Voto?ek who also became its first director. The gallery was opened to the public on 9 May, 1958. The gallery has an extensive collection that includes many valuable works of art: e.g., Romanesque statues, a series of paintings by the so-called Litom??ice Master from the beginning of the 16th century, a number of significant Baroque masterpieces, art from the 19th and 20th century, and a collection of Naïve Art.
