K. H. Mácha Theatre

Adress: Máchovy schody, ?p. 276

This is one of the oldest town theatres in the Czech Republic. It was built in the year 1822 by Josef Gaub on the site of an older agricultural building. Before the war it was home to a permanent German choir, which staged plays and operettas, sometimes even operas. From the mid 1920's performances were held once a month, later once a week and Czech plays were shown on special days. In 1945 the theatre's name was changed to that of the poet, Karel Hynek Mácha. Reconstruction and internal alterations were carried out during the years 1968-91.
