Fortifications and Parklands
On arriving in the town, everyone is struck by the town fortifications, which make up the border of the urban conservation area. The original fortifications, dating back to the year 1257, have disappeared without trace. Today's Gothic layout came about in two stages. The inner wall, topped with toothed battlements and square turrets, comes from the second half of the 14th century. The outer parkland wall, built in around 1513, has horseshoe-shaped ramparts. One of the most well-preserved ramparts can be found opposite the bus station in Dlouhá Street. From the year 1806 it was used as a prison chapel, where the famous bandit Václav Babinský served as prisoner-cum-minister. Nowadays it is home to a restaurant. The present perimeter of the fortified wall is around 1800 m. long. It's a nice place for a walk and has a view across to Dómský hill and the surrounding countryside.
