Jesuit Staircase

A monumental stone staircase built on the axis of the original bridge across the Elbe river in 1828. From 1863 it featured a statue of Romantic poet Josef Emanuel Hilschler (1806-1837) who was born in the barracks, located in the former Jesuit seminary. The statue was removed in 1945; in 1952, it was replaced by the statue of St. John Nepomucky from 1721 which was originally designed for the bridge over the Elbe river. Until 1732, the Church of the Virgin Mary stood in its vicinity; it dates from 1257 when it was used by the hospital of the Order of Crusaders of the Red Star, and during the Antireformation - protireformace, it was used by Tovarysstvo jezisovo. From 1992 the staircase features a wooden sculpture by J. Beránek entitled "Origin Unknown".
