Plague Column

Adress: Mírové nám?stí

In 1680, the city was struck by a plague that was spreading across the whole country. Out of gratitude for having overcome the epidemic which claimed approx. 400 lives, a Baroque statuary was made in the years 1681-85 by sculptor Abraham Kitzinger from D??ín in cooperation with Litom??ice stonemasons Andreas Kolderer and Ambrosio Wald, based on drafts by architect Giulio Broggio. The Plague Column was consecrated on 13 April, 1681. On top of the column stands Immaculata, an iconographic representation of the Virgin Mary on a crescent moon and the earth that is wrapped around by a snake to symbolize the original sin. Patron saints against the plague are placed on the side columns: St. Roch, St. Sebastian, St. Bartholomew and St. Francis Xavier. The statue of St. Rosalia is placed in the alcove. In 1992 the original statues were replaced by replicas made by scupltors-restorers ?estmír Mudru?ka and Ivo Hamá?ek.
