Peace Square

This square has been at the heart of the town since the early 13th century. It is in the shape of an irregular rectangle and its area of 1.8 ha makes it one of the largest in the country. It shows the importance of the town in the Middle Ages, when it was the main marketplace. Most of the houses around the square are originally Gothic. Inside and on the facades, however, all kinds of architectural style are evident. The plague column, by the artist Kitzinger, was built in 1681-83 to commemorate victims of the plague. The fountains date back to 1541. The upper one, originally made of wood, was replaced with a stone one in 1715, whilst the lower stone fountain was rebuilt as a copy of the upper one.
