Welcome to Litoměřice
Welcome to Litoměřice, a town rich in history, which will enchant you with its present and where you will certainly be happy to return in the future.
The Litoměřice region, characteristic of riverside lowlands and with its volcanic outcrops offers a rich variety of natural features.
The fertility of the landscape earned it the name Garden of Bohemia back in the 17th century.
A plethora of natural and cultural landmarks with a well-developed network of footpaths make Litoměřice a popular destination for visitors to this corner of Bohemia.
Here, at the confluence of the Labe and Ohře rivers, in the picturesque region of the Czech Central Mountains, lies one of the oldest and most beautiful Czech towns, the royal town of Litoměřice, whose population nowadays is almost 26,000 people.
As mute witness to the historic glory of Royal Litoměřice stand Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, protected under an urban preservation order since the year 1978.
Out of 256 sites, 104 of them are listed in the state record of cultural real-estate monuments, and almost all of them are to found in the historical heart of the town, which for the most part is encircled by well-preserved Gothic fortifications.
The houses around the square, the ancient cellars, numerous churches, the museum, several galleries, all these and a host of other interesting features await your visit.
Should you get tired of walking around, stroll over to the fortification parklands, where you can refresh yourself in the peace and quiet, with a view over old Litoměřice and Dómský peak, not to mention the panorama of the Czech Central Mountains, Hazmburk and the memorable Říp mountain, and here you will see why the romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha loved this region so much.
Litoměřice, however, is a town rich not only in history, it is also a town for culture and sport.
There is a wide range of cultural events on offer, not to mention the concerts of the 'varhanní léto' ('Summer of Organ Music') as well as exhibitions which are held several times a year at the town exhibition centre.
If you prefer something more sporty, there is the covered swimming pool, an outdoor pool with a waterslide, tennis courts, mini-golf and bowling alley, to name but a few. Not far from Litoměřice there is a big lake with sandy beaches where you can go swimming, yachting and surfing.
Healthy Town is the name given to a town which is actively involved in the Healthy Town project, set up by the World Health Organization, WHO. The town of Litoměřice has been a member of the National Network of Healthy Towns since the year 2000.
All the Healthy Towns are linked especially by the idea of a fuller, healthier and more satisfying life for their citizens. For this reason they are concerned with every aspect of life which could influence the health and happiness of their citizens (such as the living and social environment, development of the town, and so on).
How can you get involved?
Everyone can help by taking an interest in their surroundings and what goes on in the town, as well as by actively expressing an opinion or coming up with a good idea. In this way the town is striving to continuously keep the public more informed, through information boards, the media or via internet web-pages.
The main aims of the town as far as this project is concerned are summed up in the Health and Quality of Life Plan, which is updated every year and which we encourage the people of Litoměřice to bear in mind.
Town Information Centre
When you're in the building U Kalicha, don't forget to visit the town information centre, the best place to find out how to make the most of your time in Litoměřice. From April to October you can book a guided walk through the town, with a commentary on its history and individual sights, just as you can when entering the Kalich viewing tower, the town's emblem. Then again, if you prefer, you can take a look around the town by yourself, picking up some of the information leaflets available at the information centre or reading the descriptive plaques on some of the buildings and monuments. We wish you a pleasant stay.
